"Bears are springing up all across central Oregon.  Not black bears. Not grizzlies. Smokey Bears -- fire preventin' bears. Bears carrying shovels and wearing campaign hats. Smokey Bear - The Icon

The "only you" campaign was started in 1944 with the idea of a bear saves man.  In 1950 when a small bear cub was saved in a New Mexico fire, a national icon was born.  Smokey Bear has been a part of wild land fire prevention for 60 years now.  Though the campaign has seen minor changes throughout the years, Smokey has been a constant.  With Smokey's iconic status in mind and the realization of the devastation of wild land fires here in our own area of Bend Oregon, the Six Foot Smokey was created.
